It’s May, it’s May!
By now, spring has sprung just about anywhere – unless you’re reading this from somewhere down under, in which case I hope you enjoy winter.
Today’s guest on our Monday Morning Author Interview is Michael Ross, creator of the Wand Chronicles series. In addition to writing, Michael is an actor, a voiceover artist, a ski instructor, and a hang glider pilot. But let’s hear right from him!
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
This is true! When I went to see a clairvoyant! She kept insisting that I should write and I would be successful. But it wasn’t until a year later that I first began. I haven’t looked back
Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?
They are in my head. I have always had an active imagination, even from being a small boy
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
Well, my wife died tragically when our boys were 4 and 6, so that has been a big job. But I was also an Actor, and ran and owned 2 hair and Beauty salons. In addition I created a fitness brand called Kettfusion, that went on to be one of the top 3 fitness brands in the UK, and is also in 3 other European countries. kettfusion.com
What does your family think of your writing?
Sadly my sons and relatives just don’t read books! I always mention them in my dedications, and it makes me wonder why? Of the 17 books i have published so far, and some are best-sellers, they have only read 1 A true life story about my wife who was murdered.
What do you think makes a good story?
Its creativeness and imagination all rolled up together
Does writing energize or exhaust you?
It energizes me. I feel i have accomplished something. It has been a godsend during these bouts of lockdown…i have just written and written. Lockdown has been very productive to me.
Have you ever gotten reader’s block?
Now I am not sure I am tempting fate here? But the answer is a definitive, NO! I am a ‘Pantser’ and write by the seat of my pants. I’ve tried the ‘normal plotting’ way of writing but it destroys my creativeness. When i am writing i am telling a story, in the woods around a campfire to adults and children…that’s how it is for me.
Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
Good question. I once remember listening to one of my favorite multi-best selling authors, and he was asked this question. He laughed and then said, ” I write for myself, so therefore I am original. If my readers happen to like, all well and good” That’s my way of thinking as well
Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
I’ve done both. I’ve written 4 book series, and one off books. I have enjoyed them all. Even short stories
What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?
I refer back to the question when I first realized I wanted to write, I paid £30 to the clairvoyant. It begs the question, would i have ended up being a writer if she hadn’t told me too?
What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?
Well, I am a classically trained actor. started in theatre, then TV and films and presenting. I am a method actor. And it was when I was on stage, there were moments from Shakespere or another well known playwright, when the power of writing meant there were glimpses of me holding the audience in my hand. It is a very powerful emotion
What’s the best way to market your books?
I am no expert, which is why I am here. Two things I do know. Firstly don’t put all your eggs in one basket, in other words, I am an indie author, so don’t have all your books with Amazon say, also put them everywhere else, Kobo, Goodreads, Darft2Digital, iBooks etc
Secondly, don’t just write one book and expect to be a millionaire, it doesn’t work like that. I have written 17 books with another 5 in the pipeline, the more the merrier and hopefully the more profit
What are you working on now?
I was working on a series called the Big Fairy Adventures, just finished book 3. But a while ago i had written an adventure book for middle graders called The Moon and the Magic Box, and it has proved to be very popular, so much so, I have been inundated by children wanting a sequel, so i have broken off from the Fairy Adventures to write the sequel, called A Box Full of Aliens. This is a special book. I only have Beta readers who are children, and have invited children from around the world to draw an alien , name it and tell me what its special powers are. These images (20 altogether) will go at the start of each chapter.
What do you have coming soon?
As soon as I have finished The Box Full of Aliens, I want to write an out and out science fiction book. I know the plot already. It will involve the future, at a time when androids are very lifelike and are on the cusp of having human blood transfusions and all the complications, legal and emotional that will bring about.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I am doing my best to support children in their reading of books. Look, I know there is an important place for digital books and audiobooks, but a real book, with pages and coloreds illustrations is very important. I support children in the states that read books out, and a movement called The Right To Read. I support children, because in the future they will be the readers of paperback and hardback books.
